A Lark on the South Downs Way
– reviewed by Bronwyn Pryde

This book of poetry by Aldborough Road author Brian Hick [pictured] is divided into two sections. The first covers a walk of the South Downs Way which the author along with some friends and family members decided to undertake before they became too old to complete it. Each of the nine days of the walk is described with a sonnet. The imagery is evocative and you can imagine this band of walkers trekking day by day until they finally arrive in Eastbourne at the finish.
It must have been challenging to come up with a poem each day but the author seems to have captured the essence of the walk, along with his thoughts and feelings at the time, very well. The rest of the book consists of selected poems the author has penned over the last 20 years. They serve to complement the South Downs Way sonnets and cover many varied themes. If you are a fan of poetry this book is for you. It is beautifully presented with colour photographic illustrations throughout.
