Andy strips right down

Andy Gooch

Andy Gooch

Andy Gooch is a real craftsman. To see his workshop is a delight.  Old and worn chairs of all descriptions are being transformed into lovely pieces of furniture, many being stripped right down to the bare frame and completely rebuilt.  Rolls of beautiful material lie on a table, ready to be used.  Andy explained that re-upholstering is a real art. For example, not only does the pattern have to match on all the various faces of the chair, but the nap of the material always has to run downwards. Andy’s customers come from a wide area, stretching as far as Northiam, Tenterden, and even Canterbury. As well as his many private customers, he also does work for shops such as Busbridge’s, Battle Interiors, and Rushcraft at Hawkhurst.
He’s been in the business since 1978, starting at Michael Tyler’s on the Ridge, and set up on his own at the Tower Road premises in 2000. Andy reupholsters both antique and modern furniture, specialising in deep button furniture, and takes a pride in delivering a very rapid service. “We get it done, we get it back!” he says.
