In March next year, George Stone Ltd, builders and contractors, will be celebrating fifty years of being in Hastings. The company started as George Stone of Folkestone in 1933, and took over the current premises in Tower Road West in 1958. The company was bought in the early 1990s by current owners the Christies, who also own the opera company Glyndebourne Prod-uctions. George Stone was featured on the Channel 4 series, Grand Designs, when they turned the old Lutyens water tower at Rolvenden into living accommodation. This impressive project won the company national recognition and a regional award from the Federation of Master Builders. Another major project was the building which is now Battle Museum. Formerly a redundant and dilapidated garage at the Almonry, George Stone transformed it into new premises for the Museum, and won a Sussex Heritage Award for their work.
