Picture Puzzle 49 – answer

Art Deco clock tower

Art Deco clock tower

We received only one response to last month’s puzzle, though that was possibly one more than we expected. The pattern of blue squares in our picture adorns the Falaise Road frontage of the Art Deco clock tower at the north end of White Rock Gardens, though what this structure is called, or whether indeed it has a name, we cannot say. In fact, in trying to find out a bit more about this striking timepiece, we’ve stumbled on a bit of a mystery. Hastings Museum has nothing in its archives on the clock’s designer or date of construction, nor even any idea who commissioned it. Even East Sussex Record Office have had trouble finding anything. So once again, any information our readers can supply will be gratefully received (and published).

In the meantime a £10 token from Empress Art has been dispatched to this month’s winner, Mr M. Woodfine of Silverstone Court, London Road. Well done for working it out.

COMMENTS

Godfrey Daniel writes (Sep 2007)
Dear Sir, I think I can shed light on the clock tower in Falaise Road [Puzzle Corner 49]. In fact there’s a plaque on the side which says it all. “Southern Water – This clock tower was built by Southern Water as part of the £43 million Hastings Bathing Water Improvement Scheme and was proposed by the Right Worshipful the Mayor of Hastings, Godfrey Daniel. Completed April 2000”. A vent pipe was needed in that location and I suggested that it be disguised as a clock tower. Southern Water agreed.  Cllr Godfrey Daniel, Hastings
