Mick Turner United Kingdom Independence Party

Mick Turner.

Mick Turner.

Voice: What’s your background?
Mick: I live in Havelock Road. I’m a carpenter and joiner by trade but I retired early due to my wife’s ill health. She went in for a routine operation – not at the Conquest – and got MRSA. She was on life support for six weeks, and now her immune system has broken down she gets ongoing illnesses. Looking after her takes up a lot of my time.
Voice: What’s your political experience?
Mick:  I’m a member of UKIP and also of the Democracy Movement, which used to be the Referendum Party. I’ve never stood for election before, but I’m disillusioned by what is happening to our country. I even voted to join the EEC at the time, but Edward Heath lied to us. Local Government can be overruled by central government, who can be overruled by the EU.
Voice: Can you give an example of central government overruling a local authority?
Mick:  Not at the moment, but Blair has never used his veto in the EU. That’s the kind of thing I’m talking about. I believe in telling people the truth, and I believe in democracy, which is disappearing. People are not being given the correct information.
Voice: What are the local issues?
Mick: More police are needed – people are frightened to go out at night. And the youth centres and playing fields need revamping.
Voice: What do you plan to do if elected?
Mick:  I’d like to improve local sports facilities. Summerfields should have had a full-sized pool, but the council ducked the issue when it was built. It’s just a leisure centre when it should have been a sports centre.
Voice: What distinguishes you from the other candidates?
Mick:  My stance on the EU. I think you should ask the other candidates what they think of the EU ruling this country without the people being allowed a say? Also, we’re overcrowded with immigrants. In that heart hospital 11 out of 12 patients couldn’t speak English. We believe in controlled immigration.
