Picture Puzzle 35 – answer

Last week’s question was “Where is Memorial House?” The answer is Upper Park Road, opposite Park Road Methodist Church. It is part of the newly opened ‘Bet Bet Bet’ bookmakers in Bohemia Road.
But what was the building for? Local historian Edward Preston says “No one seems able to give a definitive answer to this question. It’s likely that the block of which it is part, was built in the late 1860s or early 1870s, and it may well have been a memorial to Prince Albert, who died in 1861. The memorial in Hastings town centre was built in 1864. I believe the statue of Albert still exists. It was on show to the public for some years in the greenhouses in Alexandra Park. I’m not sure if the clock itself is still around.”
