Is Ernie the fastest newsboy in the West? Maybe not, but certainly, at 82 years Ernie Moore can claim to be the oldest newsboy in the West – Tower Road West, that is. Yes, Ernie is up at 6:00 am delivering newspapers for Dorothy Wood of Wood’s Newsagents, six days a week, Monday to Saturday. He starts each day by walking from his home in Braybrooke Road to Bohemia to do his round, and later walks back into Hastings town.
He reckons he covers at least 3 miles a day. Ernie starts his round in Bohemia with Bohemia Road, Spring Street, Cornfield Terrace and St Peter’s Road.
He then makes his way to the top of Tower Road West and comes back to Horntye Road, Newgate Road and the Clarence Road area. How long has he been doing this? “Since I retired, at 65, seventeen years ago”. Why does he do it? “To keep fit of course”. Well done, lad.
