Bohemia Village Voice  Bohemia Village Voice

For bohemians everywhere

Lidl or Lidl?

Just how do you pronounce the name of our local German-owned store? The postbox of the Bohemia Village Voice is crammed each morning with hundreds of enquiries from residents on just this point. Opinion varies widely, some saying ‘Lee-dle’ to rhyme with ‘needle’, others opting for ‘Lid-dle’ rhyming with ‘middle’ or ‘fiddle’. Still others prefer ‘Lie-dle’, with the first syllable rhyming with ‘my’ or ‘sigh’, or even ‘Li-dell’ with the stress on the second syllable.

To solve the mystery once and for all, Bohemia Village Voice consulted a real live German, living in Wiesbaden, for a ruling. She writes: “There are some regional differences but generally Lee-dle to rhyme with needle is used.”

So now we know.
