MERRICK HOUSE (From the Chairman’s Pen) Your committee have been actively engaged on your behalf regarding the proposed reopening of Merrick House. We have assisted the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators and held a meeting at Park Road Methodist Church Hall which was packed. Anyone who was not sure what the Residents thought of the proposed reopening could have no doubt at the end of the meeting. Perhaps it’s worth remembering the history of Merrick House, when it first opened we were promised the hostel would be staffed 24 hours a day (this was in a letter from Hastings Borough Council). It was not long before the night staff was withdrawn and they became the original neighbours from hell. The YMCA then closed it down for financial reasons and Carr-Gorm became interested. Officers of the BAA with the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators had talks with Carr-Gorm and visited their hostel in Eastbourne. We were assured that Carr-Gorm’s policy was:

  1. Would want a wide range of ages as their experience showed that this made for a better hostel.
  2. Would not want residents under 18 as their residents had to sign a lease and you can’t have a legal agreement with anyone under 18.
  3. Their residents are assessed before being accepted.

We can only guess who or what has persuaded them to change their policy for this hostel. If Hastings Council want to do something for this area and its residents, why not obtain the building for a community centre for the Bohemia Area. How about it Councillors. Ray Marchant (Chairman).

ST PAUL’S SCHOOL Tesco’s are giving Computers for Schools Vouchers, if you do not have children or the children do not need them, St. Paul’s School would be very grateful for them. Please leave them at: Karina’s Wool Shop (Brenda Garnett), 131 Bohemia Road. Thank You

Rainbows

This last term we have had 18 Rainbows most weeks, a very good attendance. We have continued our plan of alternating games and crafts weekly plus a swimming gala at Bexhill Ravenside Pool with other units. We have made puppets on sticks, dragonfly shows, Fathers Day cards, squishy hedgehogs from chocolate rolls, fridge magnet penguins, had a week in Summerfields Woods and finished with our usual Teddy Bears picnic. R Noble 445117.

Brownies

Firstly let me introduce myself, I am Chris Stephens, more commonly known as ‘Brown Owl’ to my Brownies. I took over as ‘Guider in Charge’ in January from Chris Treen, and would like to say a BIG ‘THANK-YOU’ to Chris for staying with us as ‘Tawny Owl’, and for all the help she, and Lynda Rummery ‘Snowy Owl’, have given me whilst I settle in. We have two new assistant Guiders – Amanda Macnulty ‘Fluffy Owl’ and Catherine Past ‘Night Owl’. Catherines daughter is one of our Brownies.

We are sorry to be losing Bernice Whittington ‘Barn Owl’, who has been with the pack for 8 years, but we wish her love and luck in the future. We have a full, lively pack of girls aged between 7-10 years, and we enjoy making crafts, badge work, games and campfire singing. Although we didn’t get away on Pack holiday this summer, Fluffy Owl and I are hoping to take the girls away during May half term next year. However we did manage a few evenings out in the woods, for quizzes and games.

We entered the Division Easter Garden Competition, and although we didn’t win, we were proud to see our picture hanging in Priory Meadow shopping centre. The girls have been working hard on many interest badges, and have passed: Science Investigator, Athletics, Cooks, World Culture, Seasons, Pathfinder and Hostess badges – well done everyone! We even managed time for more fun when we all ‘Got Wet’ at the Division Swimming Fun Day at Glyne Gap Pool.

We are at present decorating a Harvest Collage, which we hope will hang in St Peters Church during Harvest Festival, and we are of course working on more interest badges – Jesters being one of them, and we hope to entertain parents one evening, after a bit more practice!! So – if you are sat at home reading this, and think it sounds fun, and would maybe like to join, or feel you could offer us some help in anyway, just pop along to St Peters Church Hall on a Tuesady night between 5:45pm – 7:15pm and meet us, or phone me, Chris Stephens on 719979 anytime. C. Stephens. 719978.

WHEATSHEAF GAMES The games teams at the Wheatsheaf are having another successful year. In the Pool competition, the ‘A’ team finished League Runners-up and also won the Team Cup. The ‘B’ team finished in mid-table. The Darts & Shove team have won their last 7 games, but as all of the League matches have not yet been played, the final League position is not yet known. The football season has only just started and we wish them good luck.
