JUMBLE SALE

Sonrise Church went ahead with its Jumble Sale on 27th July to raise funds for St Michael’s Hospice despite the threat of thunderstorms and heavy rain. Just to tempt the fates a paddling pool filled with plastic ducks greeted visitors to St Peter and St Paul Church in Chapel Park Road. The rain stayed away, the sun shone and jumble sold: along with cakes, drinks and beef burgers. Face painting, balloon making, a raffle and tombola all added to the fun.

Sonrise is a multi-generational church which welcomes everyone ‘no matter what.’ The ministry opened in St Leonards thirteen years ago in St Mary in the Castle and later at Hanover House in Marine Court, before moving to St Peter and St Paul. Sunday services are at 10.30am.

“We deliver a Christian message for today’s living,” explained Cathy Khan, who with her husband Glenn are the church’s pastors. “We adopt a contemporary modern style that is totally inclusive.” Evidence of this came with the live music that entertained us throughout the day.

Hastings Mayor, Councillor Alan Roberts opened the proceedings. “I enjoy supporting good causes. This is my second year as Mayor. I’ve sometimes heard myself referred to as the ‘people’s mayor,’ which is a great honour.” Mr Howard went on to win a shock-ball in the raffle.

We enjoyed more entertainment later in the day when Gizmo performed. This performing arts group is celebrating its tenth birthday under the guidance of its founder, Pat Fisher. As well as all the jumble and the Bohemia Village Voice stall, Chloe Laskey sold fudges and sweets. Her company, The Edible Orchard specialises in producing unusual styles of confectionary for special occasions. One of her most popular creations is The Sweet Tree. “I made one for a friend’s wedding and it just took off from there.”

James Bacon, who co-organised the event with Chloe Reading and Luke Manning Cooper, said: “We had a tremendous day and were really blessed with the lovely weather and the numbers attending. We managed to raise an outstanding six hundred pounds for St Michael’s Hospice. A big thank you from Sonrise Church to everyone who helped out and contributed to the success of this event. We were all touched by the amount of support from our local community.”

Publisher of the Bohemia Village Voice, John Humphries won a bottle of wine in the raffle from the Relax restaurant in Marine Court. He claims that he doesn’t drink, but he’s going along anyway – “Just for a meal, you understand.”

P.S. The thunderstorm broke after everyone arrived home.
