Sparrowhawk in St Helen's Road garden

Sparrowhawk in St Helen’s Road garden, April 2013

This amazing picture of a Sparrowhawk with its pigeon prey was taken last month in St Helen’s Road.

Sue Norton, who runs Cafe Sixty Seven in Bohemia Road arrived home after work one day at the end of April to find a garden full of feathers.

“It was just like someone had ripped open a feather pillow. They were everywhere.”

Her next door neighbour, Neil, took the picture.

“It’s amazing,” said Sue, “Because the garden is about one hundred and thirty foot long and Neil took the picture from his study window.”

The stream-lined shape and yellow eye make the Sparrowhawk easy to identify.

“I wouldn’t have known it was my garden,” said Sue,  “Except for the upturned wire basket that I use to cover new plants. I have to protect them from the mower when my husband does the grass.”

Pigeons in Hastings, beware.

Do you have any pictures of unusual wildlife in your garden? We’d love to see them.
