Unwanted Household Goods – how to get rid of them?

Mel Fisher writes (May 2009)

Dear Sir,

I find the dumping of unwanted household goods in the street extremely selfish.

I understand the council charges £10 for three items. To some people this is an amount they can ill afford. I would find it hard to pay the council £10.

When I lived in Germany and in Belgium they had a system that worked extremely well. On a designated day of the week, you could put out anything that you needed to dispose of and it would be taken away, free of charge. It costs millions of pounds each year across the UK to clear up after flytippers, so why can’t we adopt the same system here?

The council would say they do not have the funds. If collection were only once day per month, it would cut down fly tipping drastically. People would hardly go to the trouble of dragging their rubbish to another street if they knew it would be collected from their own home.

Makes sense to me.

Mel Fisher, St Peter’s Road.
