Springfield Valley – dumping of rubbish

E Law writes (May 2009)

Dear Sir, I am writing with concern as to the current state of disrepair and general dumping of rubbish along Springfield Valley (just off London Road next to the launderette).

I have been picking up some of the litter (especially glass bottles and cans dropped at the side of the road) but I have noticed that some people are regularly using it as a place to leave unwanted rubbish. The road is ‘unadopted’ so the local council do not have the responsibility to sweep or clear the street.

There is a lot of litter building up around the parking bay for the launderette. If people see litter dropped they tend to care less about dropping theirs and so the problem grows. Springfield Valley is a well-used pedestrian route through to local shops and schools. If the builders’ merchants were able to move to a more convenient out-of-town site (bearing in mind that usually customers and deliveries require a vehicle to use, so do not need the service to operate within a crumbling one-way residential area in town!) the land would be of considerable use locally – residential development – a community centre or café – library – parking for London Road shops . . . any more ideas . . . ?

There are concerns over the size and amount of heavy lorries using the small turning into the road at the pedestrian crossing; this poses many possible dangers to the general public and structural damage both to the launderette and the already cracked and broken surface of the road itself. Many local residents have young children and pets. Would it not become a more attractive area if the lorries stopped, the road surface was filled in and something positive was happening for the community? Perhaps people would have more respect and stop dropping rubbish!

Yours truly, E Law, Springfield Valley.
