Jonathan Broughton writes (Friday 15 Mar 2013)

Ben Randall-Smith from the Appliance Shop on Bohemia Road took on the Comic Relief challenge by sitting in a freezer full of baked beans. Dressed in red, with a red nose and red wig, he lay in the freezer while staff from the shop poured in the baked beans. Cold baked beans on a very cold day (Friday 15 March 2013).

“The local community has been great,” said his wife, Andrea, “So far local people and shops have donated two hundred tins of baked beans and we are expecting more.”
Andrea came up with the idea for Red Nose Day.

The freezer, on the pavement at the front of the shop, is clearly visible to pedestrians and passing traffic and toots of encouragement came from motorists driving past.

Ben promises to stay in the freezer for three hours (!), helped along by pints of his favourite beverage and the generous residents of Bohemia donating money to causes supported by Comic Relief.

Postscript: Ben raised six hundred pounds for Comic Relief. Three hours of sitting in cold baked beans and the biting easterly wind left him exhausted and it took him the whole weekend to recover.

Congratulations Ben – perhaps a warmer challenge next year.

Question: How many beans make five.

Answer: Two beans, one bean, a bean and a half and half a bean.
