Dog Mess – Name and Shame Offenders?

St Peter’s Road residents write (Jul 2008)

We moved to Bohemia a year and a half ago and have really loved the area. Our street is wonderful. We have met so many nice people and it makes such a difference from where we lived in London where we knew no-one in our neighbourhood. There is a lovely sense of community here and to actually know most of the people on your road really enhances that. There are a few things, though, that we feel would greatly improve the area. One of the main problems is the amount of dog crap everywhere. It just astounds me that people let their dogs mess anywhere without picking it up.

It’s unhygenic, it makes walking on the pavement an obstacle course, it gets ingrained on the wheels of your pushchair and shoes, it smears all over the road when it rains and it smells even worse when it’s a hot day. Most importantly, it’s not the general public’s responsibility to have to deal with cleaning up the mess or having it in any way enter our lives. It’s the dog owners. They love their dogs enough to have them – love them enough to pick up their crap!

We would greatly benefit from having a few more bins that they could place their dog’s mess in. There are definitely not enough of these. It might also help if the only sign warning of the possibility of a fine wasn’t faded and half way up a pole well above eye level. Apart from the spot fines, I think the best way of dealing with the problem is to ‘name and shame’. If you have a digital camera, take a photo of the offender and then we can have  a page in the Voice with all the photos.

Dear Sir, I refer to the letter from ‘St Peter’s Road residents’ about dog mess [issue 61, July 2008]. Yes, we do have a dog excrement problem, sadly caused by a minority of uncouth dog owners, who really should not be allowed to keep dogs. As for the morons who suggest burning down the houses of those who allow their dogs to foul the pavements, would their efforts not be put to better use burning down the houses of people who continually cycle on our pavements, without consideration for elderly people or young people, burning down the houses of people who openly deal lethal drugs in our area, burning down the houses of people who smash bottles in the streets and those that put the wrong kind of rubbish in their bins? Leave respectable dog owners alone and start to address the real problems.
