Fairies in Summerfields Wood

Written by Pamela Haines.

As small trespassers we once chanted this verse as we ran around in Summerfields Wood. It is from a poem written in Victorian times by William Allingham, an Irish poet.

We did not know then that it was called ‘The Fairies’. We did not believe in fairies anyway and wanted to climb trees.

Up the airy mountain,
Down the rushy glen,
We daren’t go a-hunting,
For fear of little men.

Sorry, no nuns in this one!

Pamela Haines, Beaufort Court, Silverhill.
