Needlepoint – where did this name come from?

I wonder if any of your readers know why ‘Needlepoint’ is so called?
The junction of London Road and Bohemia Road, with traffic lights and central display of coniferous plants has been known as ‘Needlepoint’ for years.
I heard that there was a haberdasher’s which sold embroidery kits etc, located at this road junction, but can find no-one to corroborate the story.
