Lidl – is it ‘Leedle’ or ‘Liddle’ ?

J.B. writes (May 2008)

Dear Sir,

I was glancing at an old copy of the your magazine, [edition 18, Wed 21 June 2006] in which you say the correct, i.e. German, pronunciation of Lidl is ‘Leedle’  – rhyming with ‘needle’.

I believe that, without a question of a doubt, the most commonly used pronunciation in the UK is ‘Liddle’, rhyming with ‘fiddle’. Why would we want to sound like Germans anyway? Surely if we want to use ‘Liddle’ then it should be ‘Liddle’?

Do we want to ‘sound like Germans’? – Ed.
