The worlds first commercially produced televsion which can be seen in our very own local museum in Bohemia Road

Last month’s picture shows an example of the first commercial televsion receiving sets produced by the Baird Company in 1930. It is on permanent exhibition at our local Museum in Bohemia Road. This month’s winner – and only entrant with the correct answer is Mr Hughes of Newgate Road who has been sent a £10 Empress Art gift voucher. Well done Brian! John Logie Baird (1888-1946), a Scotsman, was the first person in the world to demonstrate a working television system, in January 1926. This was a system using mechanical picture scanning, with electronic amplification at the transmitter and at the receiver. It could be sent over ordinary telephone lines and by radio, leading to an historic transmission of television from London to New York in February 1928. Baird’s work in our town enables Hastings to claim to be ‘The Birthplace of Television’.
