Keen cyclist Phil Dempsey of Bohemia Road has won the Hastings Festival Bike Race for the second year in a row in a record time of 14.72 seconds (writes Greg Lee). The charity race is a popular Old Town carnival week attraction and starts at the bottom of Crown Lane. The object is to cycle a large heavy butcher’s bike up the very steep hill while sitting on a reproduction of a ten shilling note. If the note is lost before reaching the finish the rider is disqualified. This year over 100 contestants including four previous champions attempted the steep hill climb. Phil made his winning run just as the competition came to a close and also managed to beat his previous winning time of 15.2 seconds. After a period working abroad in Taiwan, engineer Phil decided, three years ago, to relocate to Hastings due to work commitments, and divulged his winning formula was a pint (or two) of Guinness before the race. He is hoping to enter next year and is already in training – at the Crown public house!
