The Statue of Jan Hus (Bohemian Martyr)

The Statue of Jan Hus (Bohemian Martyr)

Part 4 of our series on Bohemia in Long Island, New York

This statue of Jan Hus, a Czech who was noted for starting the Reformation a hundred years before Martin Luther, was erected in Union Cemetery in 1893.  The statue was carved in Vermont at the cost of $1,400.  The guest speaker at the dedication was the Rev. Vincent Pisek, a minister at the Jan Hus Bohemian Brethren Presbyterian Church in Yorkville (New York City).

  1. I always admired this statue whenever I visited the cemetery. My grandfather is buried at the cemetery’s edge near the church.
His name is William Schovanec. My grandmother, Rose, whose name is on the headstone, is not buried there. Her ashes reside with
me. We live in Maine now and I doubt if I will ever be able to visit again.
