“The biggest guitar shop in Hastings” that is how Roy Lemon describes his latest retail venture in Bohemia. Roy, 54, from Vale Road, Silverhill, and son Adam, 18, opened the ‘Legends’ shop in Bohemia Road in January this year.
“Trade is really good”, says Roy, “This is my second guitar shop; I had one about 20 years ago, in Rye, but then I went on the road. I played for about eight years with ‘Bad Penny’ and then for three years with ‘Lock, Stock & Three Smoking Ferrets’. I’m still doing a bit of gigging”.
When the Voice called for an interview, Roy and Adam were busy re-arranging their stock of about 200 guitars (see picture). “We sell every make: Fenders, Gibson, Epiphones, Takamines. We also sell mikes, music stands, everything a musician would need. Our dearest guitar is probably a Gibson at £1,800 and our cheapest is an electric guitar at £40. We also do an electro-acoustic guitar for £80. There’s a lot of value here, which is why we have grilles and shutters. At night, all the stock is taken out of the window and the shutter is rolled down”. At weekends, Roy and Adam are joined by popular local musician Simon Shaw.
