In February this year, the Southwater Area Residents Association (SARA), was awarded £10,000 from the National Lottery (picture). The award is being used to pay for the creation of a decorative ceramic tile wall to be fixed onto the wall at the corner of Stainsby Street and Station Approach by Warrior Square railway station (see map). This will welcome residents and visitors and provide a ‘gateway’ to the Southwater area.
The artwork will be designed by Hastings-based arts and architecture practice One Two One, working with SARA, and students from the University of Brighton, under the guidance of Alma Boyes. The artwork for the wall will reflect aspects of the history of Southwater and the lives of local residents. Users of the Southwater Area Community Centre will take part in research and design, and Hastings Museum is researching early maps and historical images of the area. It is hoped that further works will be commissioned – if funding can be found. [details kindly supplied by Elise Liversedge & Mary Hooper]
