For bohemians everywhere

In Short 2

ICE CREAM – Alison of Bohemia Road’s Cheap & Cheerful store has splashed out on a ‘Mister Softee’ ice cream dispenser. “The machine cost me £1,000; I bought it from a shop that was closing down in Eastbourne; they’d paid £5,500 for it new”. A standard ice-cream is £1, or £1.20 with a ‘99’ flake; sprinkles are 10p and sauce is 5p. “It’s the only ice-cream machine in Bohemia”, says Alison.
CHURCHES QUIZZED – a team from St Matthews Church was victorious at the annual inter-church quiz, which took place at the Concordia Hall on Saturday March 7th. Teams from 17 local churches filled the hall, and were challenged by questions on widely varying topics. The evening was efficiently organised by last year’s winners, Calvert Methodists. Refreshments were served at half-time, everyone enjoyed a very successful occasion, and £162 was sent to Christian Aid.
MEXICAN PIG – this blue and white pottery pig is on sale (£15) at Portobello furniture store on the corner of London Road and Lower South Road. A smaller version costs £10.
RAINBOWS SHOE BOXES – St Peter’s Rainbows and St Matthew’s Rainbows (pictured) packed shoe boxes with goodies for women soldiers in Afghanistan. The shoe boxes were presented to the charity ‘Thank the Forces’. The youngsters were made aware of the harsh conditions the soldiers have to cope with. They were shocked to hear that sometimes they can go for 9 weeks without washing!
DRAMA QUEEN JEAN – Jean Alexander has been a drama teacher for more than 25 years.  “I love it. It’s not a hobby – or a living – I just really enjoy doing it,” she says. Although a fully qualified nurse, Jean’s first love is the stage. She qualified as an external student at the London Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Now, Jean, ably assisted by daughter Heather, runs drama classes at the Red Cross Hall in Newgate Road. “One of my ex-pupils has gone on to Cambridge and we’re hoping she’ll get into the Footlights Revue”. Jean’s classes are open to all – from 6 or 7 up to teenagers and adults. “This year we put on three one-act plays at the Hastings Music Festival.
BOHEMIA VILLAGE FAYRE – organiser Kat Lee Ryan says that this year’s Bohemia Village Fayre will be held on Saturday 18th July. Further info: katdogleeryan@yahoo.com tel: 07849 093154.
WILFRED HENRY CORNWALL – this gentleman’s family is building a family tree and are seeking any information about him. Mr Cornwall used to work in one of Bohemia’s several butchers shops. Can you help?
