Despite announcing closure, Alison and Paul Ansell have decided to keep their shop, Cheap and Cheerful, open after all. The couple had decided to close due to falling sales attributed to the economic climate, lack of parking, gasworks in the weeks up to Christmas, shoplifting, and competition from shops which have opened since Cheap and Cheerful started two years ago, including the proposed Asda. After their closing down sale in October, Alison (pictured) had second thoughts. “So many people have been really nice and said they’d miss us. I’ve been saying, ‘Do come in to support us now we’re staying open – the profits on things under £1 are so small that you’ve got to sell a lot.” She is altering the name to ‘Cheap & Cheerful Discount Store’. The couple also opened a kiosk, Munchies, at Rock-a-Nore, last summer. ‘It did well, but is only seasonal’.
