Help with your EDF bill

Richard Smart writes (Nov 2009)

In June 2009 I helped a lady on Income Support who was in a crisis. I discovered that each week she had to pay £15 for gas and £15 for electricity. This was far too high and had to be reduced but she was on a key meter and she needed electricity and gas to survive. Her husband had left her and the bills had fallen into arrears. I phoned the gas suppliers and said that it was too much to have to pay £30 a week for elec and gas because she had other bills to pay (water rates, phone bills etc), as well as food, and that she could not sustain herself and could this amount be reduced. I added that if the lady does not eat and ends up in hospital because of ill health, what good is she to anyone when none of the arrears will ever get paid – she needs to eat and live a basic healthy life.

I helped her complete an application form to EDF Energy Trust*. Some weeks elapsed before I got a reply. They said that they had made a decision to grant her an award of over £2,000 to clear her arrears. Now she is no longer having to pay £30 a week for gas and elec and can budget properly and enjoy a better healthier standard of living. What a joy to see someone now being able to have a basic standard of living thanks to an award being made to clear her elec and gas arrears.
