INDIAN REVERIE<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I gaze from my Verandah<\/p>\n

On a still and tropic morn,<\/p>\n

The garden shimmers in the heat,<\/p>\n

An Indian day is born.<\/p>\n

The HimalayanMountains,<\/p>\n

Cold, forbidding, free,<\/p>\n

Rule the far horizon<\/p>\n

In silent Majesty.<\/p>\n

The garden has great beauty,<\/p>\n

Filled with exotic trees,<\/p>\n

Hibiscus, bougainvillaea,<\/p>\n

All the prospects please.<\/p>\n

Beyond this riot of colour<\/p>\n

Verdant bushes of tea<\/p>\n

Stand regimented rank on rank<\/p>\n

As far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n

Frangipani blossoms lie<\/p>\n

Like stars upon the grass,<\/p>\n

Their heady perfume<\/p>\n

Intoxicates my senses as I pass.<\/p>\n

The sweeper in my garden<\/p>\n

Toils hard, she seldom rests;<\/p>\n

In the stifling heat of noon-day<\/p>\n

Her baby suckles her puny breast.<\/p>\n

My child in his cool cradle<\/p>\n

Sleeps sound on bed of rags<\/p>\n

Frets on the mango-shaded ground.<\/p>\n

I know that in this country<\/p>\n

Happy I\u2019ll never be;<\/p>\n

Whilst all around I see<\/p>\n

So much about poverty.<\/p>\n

Shadows grow long in the garden,<\/p>\n

The sweeper\u2019s task is done,<\/p>\n

With crying child she wends<\/p>\n

Her weary way home.<\/p>\n

I long for England, Land of Hope,<\/p>\n

No Glory here for me!<\/p>\n

The tropic night falls swift and dark,<\/p>\n

And ends my reverie.<\/p>\n
