The department are\u00a0encouraged (a few days a year) to get involved in\u00a0community based projects \u2013 so thanks to them for\u00a0helping out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Butterflies\u00a0<\/strong>The long grass ride and the woodland edge\u00a0behind the ambulance station is\u00a0usually a good habitat for\u00a0butterflies. Each year the\u00a0Friends submit\u00a0butterfly records\u00a0to the annual Big Butterfly Count (a project organised\u00a0by Butterfly Conservation). The poor spring and early<br \/>\nsummer weather was bad timing for the lifecycle of\u00a0butterflies and we feared that populations would be\u00a0hard hit. There have been good numbers of Commas\u00a0and Large Skippers, low counts of Gatekeepers and\u00a0Large Whites, very few Holly Blues, no Common Blues,\u00a0an occasional Red Admiral and plenty of Speckled\u00a0Woods. Early numbers were disturbingly low (or nonexistent)\u00a0but they have increased with the improved\u00a0weather of August.<br \/>\nIt will be interesting to observe how this year\u2019s poor\u00a0breeding season affects butterfly populations in future\u00a0years, but the mixed habitat of our Local Nature\u00a0Reserve is a good place to look for butterflies on a\u00a0summer\u2019s day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next Task Day\u00a0<\/strong>To clean out the\u00a0\u2018Roman Bath\u2019 folly on\u00a0Sun 18 Nov, 10-1.30pm\u00a0Meeting at Summerfield\u2019s\u00a0Leisure Centre entrance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thank you volunteers\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Hastings Borough Council rangers wanted to\u00a0thank all the people who had been actively\u00a0involved in Summerfield\u2019s Wood over the years.<br \/>\nWe decided to combine a task day with a BBQ\u00a0and then to bolt on the end of it a Moth Evening\u00a0event. The volunteers were hungry after their<br \/>\nclearance task and as darkness fell the moths\u00a0were attracted to specialist bright lights and\u00a0luckily not the BBQ fire. There were some moths<br \/>\nbut the weather wasn\u2019t quite right. No doubt the\u00a0moth group will return soon but we can\u2019t\u00a0guarantee food for them every time.
