Butterfly – Which Species?<\/p><\/div>\n

Dear Sir,<\/p>\n

I photographed this pretty butterfly which was flitting around my garden earlier today [3 June 2009]. Would any reader know which species it is?<\/p>\n

It is a\u00a0 migratory butterfly and a great number have arrived here from the Continent over the last couple of months. The migration starts from North Africa and the immigrants are particularly prolific this year.\u00a0Phil Sellens.Warrior Square.<\/p>\n

They are pretty and there are lots of them about at the moment. Keith Sellens<\/strong> writes (Sep 2009)\u00a0Dear Sir, I cannot believe that someone didn\u2019t know the name of this butterfly! It\u2019s a painted lady and 20 million of them are reckoned to have come over this year from North Africa. In June, whilst walking across a field, I saw literally hundreds of them. From a distance and when flying, it is similar in appearance to a small tortoiseshell, which I haven\u2019t seen for at least three years.
