Long-standing residents of Bohemia may remember the collapse of the facade of Kendal House (pictured)  on Chapel Park Road back in the late 1990s. The five-storey Victorian house, which at the time had been converted into a number of flats, was subsequently pulled down, since when the site has been vacant. Now a planning application has been submitted for a large development of flats on the site. The new building would be six storeys high and comprise 36 flats.
The development has attracted a considerable number of detailed objections from local residents. These have ranged from the loss of daylight to surrounding properties resulting from a building of this size to the increase in environmental, traffic-noise and road-safety concerns that an extra 36 dwellings would bring to the area. Other concerns include the potential depreciation of local house prices, the inappropriate size of the building in comparison to its neighbours, the loss of privacy for properties adjacent to and opposite the new building, and the effects of so many new residents on already stretched local resources.
A decision from Hastings Council’s planning committee is due at the end of February. [JB]
