Nine flats for Newgate Reservoir

A development of nine flats has been approved for land immediately adjacent to Newgate Reservoir on the south side of Amherst Road. The applicant is Park Lane Homes (South East) Ltd, whose offices on Bohemia Road will be well-known to local residents. Another proposal for a development of four semi-detached houses and two flats had previously been submitted by Southern Water (who still manage the underground reservoir) in August last year, as reported by the Village Voice in issue 33, 19 August 2006. That scheme was later withdrawn by the applicant, and this new plan, involving the construction of a complex of four one-bed and five two-bed flats and associated parking space, was submitted in December.
The new plan has been approved by Hastings Council’s planning committee, though not without reservations, as local councillor and planning committee member Vivienne Bond explained to the Voice. ‘The original plan, submitted by another applicant [Southern Water], was for six terraced houses, which the planning committee refused. It came back as four houses, as we’d suggested, and a couple of flats, and we approved it. But then the applicant withdrew the plan. We were unhappy that it came up again as this new development of flats, because the previous designs were much better. But, unfortunately, we couldn’t find a good-enough planning reason to turn it down.’ [JB]
