St Peters Church

LUNCH CLUB
Local resident Don Ray is running a lunch club in St Peter’s Church Hall every Monday at 12.30pm. Subsidised by a charity connected with the church, the club is confined to people who live in the parish of St Peter and St Paul. A typical menu could be carrot and coriander soup, roast gammon with potatoes and two veg, syrup sponge with custard, and coffee. Soup and coffee are made by the organisers, while the main course and dessert are supplied by Sandown School kitchen. A three-course lunch costs 50p. The club currently has 18 members but can cater for up 40. Anyone living within the parish can apply for membership to Don Ray, 6 Clarence Road, tel: 439556.
WHIST DRIVE
Following the lunch club at the same venue there is a whist drive every Monday from 2 to 4pm. Anyone who can play a reasonable hand of whist is welcome to turn up. There is no limit on numbers. Entry costs £1, and there are small cash prizes and also a raffle. [JB]
BOOK SALE
St Peter’s Church Hall will host its anuual book sale on Saturday 17th March. This will be the seventh year of an event whose popularity continues to increase. Books are sold at bargain prices, attracting dealers and members of the public alike. Typical prices are 30p for paperbacks and 80p for hardbacks, though the better-quality books are individually priced. There is no admission charge, so even those who buy nothing are welcome to have a browse and a coffee. The book sale is open from 10am until 2pm. [Stewart Buchan]
